“Uber said it plans to begin testing urban air taxis in Dallas, Los Angeles, and Dubai in 2020 .” Just helicopters, I assume. I just passed over that article about Porsche wanting to get into this segment, but is this actually a thing? Any reason to be more hopeful about it today than they were 70 years ago? What difference does the rise of autonomy play?

I have so little faith in flying cars becoming a thing, that I’m almost to the point of not even bothering to click on such headlines.

I mean.... maybe for mass transit we could see flying alternatives... I think that in Mexico City for instance, we could use blimps for the trips across the state... but that would be a mess.

This is clearly a service for the very rich.

Right. I still haven’t read the Jalop article about Porsche, but the 2020 bit from Uber piqued my interest. Are small-sedan-sized autonomous quadracopters on the horizon?

Yeah, and rich people love being wasteful...

They’ve been promising us a Big Bright Tomorrow™ for a long time now. I’m still waiting.
Also, Esperanto. LOL.

“2 more years” LOL
There’re so many hurdles to clear, I’m just not seeing it. And even then, it wouldn’t be cheap. I have a really hard time seeing this ever becoming a big business.

Uber-branded chopper service in Dallas, Los Angeles, Dubai doesn’t seem like a stretch, actually - but definitely a service for the very rich.

Do you have any idea where that poster came from?

I’m pretty sure there are already services that do such things. Uber will basically bring it to the slightly less rich just like they did with the upper levels of their current services.

Bingo! McCall did that for a ‘73 issue of National Lampoon . It was also used by Dan Israel for an album he put out in 2011. The text was added later, it seems. Interestingly, there is a Sangamo in both the US and UK , but they make electric meters, sonar, and aircraft instruments.

Yup. It will convince some people that they can use a service that they assumed was always beyond their means. UberJet after that?

Uber Jet sounds familiar. That may already be a thing somewhere. If not I can easily see that.

It looks like there’s a company that refers to itself (or others do) as the Uber of jets.
